Malgorzata Kawashima

about the artist

Malgorzata Kawashima works with transparent watercolors, sometimes combining acrylics and pastels. Most of her work is deeply connected to the daily life, which is evident in glimpses of pets' paw prints, The New York Times readings, love for flowers, coffee, tea, and in tribute to her Polish grandmother - never ending collecting of fabric samples, that make their way into the collage works.

Malgorzata came to Florida from Poland in 1978. She graduated from Florida International University with a B.F.A. Degree in 1985, and completed one year of postgraduate studies in Painting at the University of Miami in 1992. Her work has been exhibited in local art museums, public libraries, art guilds, and bookstores for over 20 years. Her first one-woman show took place in 1988 at the Main Library in Fort Lauderdale. In 1996 her mixed media painting "Roots IV" was exhibited at the Annual Hortt Competition held at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale. In 2002 her watercolor painting "Mermaid's Landing" was awarded First Place in the Watercolor category in the "Imagery", the Annual Local Artist's competition at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery. Her works are in private collections in the USA, Poland, Japan and France.

She teaches watercolor and mixed media painting, and creative drawing at the Sunrise Civic Center. She lives in Sunrise, Florida with her husband and two daughters.

Artist Statement

My goal is in creating two-dimensional images on paper or canvas that express the spontaneity and movement of the multidimensional world that I live in.

Art is a reflection of the universe, the bigger one, that includes the stars, and the personal one, with all the little things that we do every day to exist, to connect, to live. I hope that through my work, I speak truth, and that the viewers can find what they are looking for.
